Becoming One in Christ
Jesus prayed that the Church He is
building would be one with God and one with each other.
Prior to the day of Pentecost, the Holy Spirit did a
work in the spirits of the disciples to such an extent
that when they gathered the Word says they were in one
accord. To be in one accord means “to be in one
mind and purpose.” Those disciples who gathered
were in one mind and accord about receiving the promise
of the Father (Luke 24:49; Acts 1:4).
Those who go to the starting line
of a race should always be prepared. I watched some
police recruits being trained this week. Part of their
training included distance running. One of their
trainers said that they should have already been in
shape so that the run would be a healthy release of
stress from the overall training, rather than a strain.
The present-day Church is straining because she is not
in unity with Jesus or with each other. (The truth is
that you cannot be one with the Lord if you are not one
with His body.) How can you love God Whom you have not
seen if you don't love those you do see?
Those who seek unity in Christ
should yield themselves to the Spirit of Christ and
allow Him to make them humble before God and each
other. Above all else, I want Jesus, the Messiah, to
live His life in me, and I want my old nature to be on
the cross. I then want to be in the unity of the faith
with my fellow brothers and sisters in Christ and,
together with them, fulfill God's will for us on earth.
When disciples come to this place, they are ready to be
in one accord with Jesus, the Head of the body, and
with all other disciples who have had true humility
worked in them by the Spirit of God.
What is humility? In Acts 20:19,
it is serving the Lord in modesty, in lowliness, in
humble-mindedness, in a sense of moral insignificance,
and in a humble attitude of unselfish concern for the
welfare of others. Only when Christians become humble
disciples can we be in one mind and accord and continue
to work together to the glory of Jesus Christ and the
fulfillment of His work on earth. Jesus emptied Himself
and lived on earth only to do the Father's will. When
we empty ourselves and allow Him to live His life in
us, He continues doing the Father's will on earth. This
is how we are to do the works He did and even greater
works.
Deuteronomy 6:4 teaches us,
“The Lord our God, the Lord is one!” The
Hebrew word for “one” means “one;
unit; united; unity.” It is from a root word
meaning “to bring together, to unify; to collect
one's thoughts.” The Godhead is one, and so
should the body of Christ be one with God and with each
other.
With us, it is impossible, but
with God, all things are possible. Will we respond to
His call and submit to His Spirit to make us His humble
body? The Holy Spirit will accomplish it when we get
serious about it! The Lord God bless us and help us to
be one in Christ, to be one with God and with one
another.

BIBLICAL APPLICATION:
Live in harmony with one another;
do not be haughty (snobbish, high-minded, exclusive),
but readily adjust yourself to [people, things] and
give yourselves to humble tasks. Never overestimate
yourself or be wise in your own conceits.
